OLLI India - India: Islamic Art, Hindu Painting and Folk Arts
Course Description
Are you thrilled by the immortal Taj Mahal in Agra? What about the Red Fort in Delhi, with its magnificent Peacock Throne, Akbar the Great's fabled city of Fatehpur Sikri and delightful Islamic gardens and miniature paintings, inspired by Persian art? But this course contains much more: the fabulous palaces of the independent Rajput kings, Hindu paintings, some of which express a mode in Indian music, and many of which depict Krishna and his beloved Radha in lush settings. And then there is the rich and fascinating world of Indian folk arts and handicrafts, including blue pottery made primarily from ground quartz, craft items connected with itinerant storytellers, hand-painted playing cards, jewelry and saris. Please join art historian Douglas Barker for a look at the beautiful and exotic arts of India.
