Course Description

On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth becam a federal holiday. Many recognize that this day celebrates the end of slavery, but don’t know where the date originates or much about its signifance other than slavery ending. This lecture will look at the history of Juneteeneth, both the original date from the 1800s, and the specific timing of Juneteeth becoming a federal holiday. In doing so, it will create a deeper appreciation for the history of this country, develop an understanding of racism in the United States, and consider how to celebrate what has been accomplished so far (and how to make further progress).
