Course Description

Explore the songs and times of the great songwriters of stage and screen. Using clips from Broadway, film and television, we will share their life stories, hits and misses, some gossip (all in good fun) and appreciate their genius. If music be the food of love, let’s gorge ourselves. Join us as we learn about Irving Berlin, a truly Americana musical songsmith who popularized the ragtime musical; George Gershwin, a masterful songwriter for the Broadway stage, Hollywood and Carnegie Hall; Cole Porter, America’s most sophisticated, romantic and risqué songwriter; Rodgers and Hart, whose lush music and tricky lyrics were a perfect blend; and Kander and Ebb, one of the late 20th century’s most prolific song teams. Enjoy musical masterpieces such as Annie Get Your Gun, God Bless America, I Got Rhythm, Rhapsody in Blue, The Lady Is a Tramp and All That Jazz.
