Course Description

Queen Elizabeth I was called the Virgin Queen because she never married. That doesn’t mean she didn’t have passionate feelings for some men. Queen Elizabeth’s love life is particularly tied to another woman, Lettice Knollys, whose second marriage would earn her the Queen’s displeasure. Although the Queen would not marry Robert Dudley, she didn’t want Lettice or anyone else to have him either. Eventually Lettice would also lose her son to the Queen. We will look at why Queen Elizabeth chose not to marry and how her relationships with Robert Dudley and Rob¬ert Devereux—Lettice’s son and Robert Dudley’s stepson—would affect Lettice Knollys, the Countess of Essex and of Leicester.
